A Thriving Venture: Three Years of Successful Spine Gourd Farming

For the past three years, our farm has been cultivating spine gourd, a venture that has proven both rewarding and profitable. This high-value vegetable, fetching Rs. 120 per kg in the market, has become a staple in our bi-annual harvests. Despite the initial investment in infrastructure, including the erection of GI poles, trellis creation, mulching, and the implementation of a drip irrigation system, we saw a remarkable return on investment within just one year.

Choosing the Right Variety: Arka Bharath

Our selected variety, Arka Bharath, has been a game-changer. Initially we procured saplings from Central Horticultural Experiment Station, Chettaalli Coorg. Propagated through tubers, now we have our own nursery of tuber derived saplings. Each unripe fruit weighs nearly 200 grams, with attractive gold shine. This cultivar demands manual pollination, a practice we faithfully carry out in the early morning hours. The meticulous attention to this process has ensured a bountiful fruit set and optimal yield.

Ideal Conditions for Growth

Originally from tropical climate, crop requires a generous amount of sunlight and consistent water supply throughout the cropping season. The variety has showcased resilience, adapting well to our farming conditions.

Challenges and Considerations

While spine gourd has been a profitable venture, it is crucial to note that it cannot tolerate waterlogging and thrives best in well-drained soil. Manual Pollination could be challenging sometimes. Additionally, providing shade is not advisable, as the crop flourishes under ample sunlight. It cannot toleartae frost or chill.
